Author

This field allows you to select an author using a drop-down box, which queries the author of a illustrated work.

Title

This index allows you to conduct a free-text search against the titles of (a) individual illustrations (including alternative titles), (b) the works which they illustrate, and (c) the source text in which they were printed.

You can search both partial (e.g. 'bright' will yield 'bright' and 'brighton') and whole terms (e.g. 'bright' will only yield 'bright') by selecting the appropriate radio button.

If you enter more than 1 term, all of the terms will be searched for across each field: e.g. 'sea good' will return all works containing both 'sea' and 'good' in any of the title indexes (illustration, work, source text): the result here would be 'Sea-weeds' in Good Words.

Illustrator

This field allows you to select an illustrator using a drop-down box, which queries the artist responsible for the source illustration.

Engraver

This field allows you to select an engraver using a drop-down box, which queries the engraver of the illustration as it appears in the text .

Place of publication

This field allows you to select the primary place of publication using a drop-down box. Here, primary is given to indicate the principal location on a title-page imprint: e.g. 'London: Chapman & Hall, 1862' .

Work publication date

As the census year of publication for the illustrations in this pilot project is 1862, this field allows you to search against the original date of publication for the illustrated works (rather than the illustrations themselves).

This encapsulates works published during the Renaissance (1503) through 1862. Where works with an early provenance are concerned, if it has been impossible to fix upon a date, approximate publication dates are given; failing this, the floruit dates of the respective author is given instead.

Iconographic keywords

This index allows you to conduct a free-text search against the iconographic descriptions of the images. You can search any combination of keywords: the more terms selected, the more the query will be restricted. Prefer plurals for nouns and present tense for verbs.

• Examples: 'children'; 'dogs'; 'playing'; 'children dogs'; 'children dogs playing'.

You can search both partial terms (e.g. 'sea' will yield 'sea' and 'seasons') and whole terms (e.g. 'sea' will only yield 'sea') but note that partial terms will yield less precise results (e.g. 'sing' rather than 'singing' will yield 'kissing').

Primary publisher

This field allows you to select the primary publisher of an illustrated source text using a drop-down box. Here, primary is given to indicate the principal publisher on a title-page imprint: e.g. 'London: Chapman & Hall, 1862'.

Genre:

This field allows you to select works from the following genres using a drop-down box:

• Fiction: children s literature, novels, stories;
• Non-fiction: essays, letters, sketches;
• Poetry.

As well as allowing users to query the database, the order in which records are displayed can also be selected, by using this drop-down box. By default, the database displays results by Illustrator, and secondarily (in all cases) by the unique DMVI code assigned to the record.

Ways of ordering records are as follows:

• Illustrator (default): the artist of the original image;
  
• Author of the illustrated text;
  
• Engraver: the engraver of the illustrated image;
  
• Source text: the short-title of the book/periodical within which the text was published;
  
• Illustration title: the short-title of the illustration;
  
• Date: the original publication date of the illustrated text;
  
• Genre: the generic classification of the illustrated text.
