This index allows you to conduct a free-text search against both bibliographic and iconographic fields in one field.

The following bibliographic fields are searched against: author, illustrator, engraver, illustration title, title of work illustrated, title of source text, place of publication, and publisher. You can search any combination of keywords: the more terms selected, the more the query will be restricted.

When searching iconography, prefer plurals for nouns and present tense for verbs.

• Examples: 'children'; 'dogs'; 'playing'; 'children dogs'; 'children dogs playing'.
  

When combining bibliographical and iconographical terms, please follow the above rules to ensure integrity of results.

• Examples: 'trollope children'; 'trollope children dogs playing'; 'trollope millais children'.
  

Note also, that some terms might be common to both the bibliographical and iconographical fields, e.g. 'London': searching this and similar terms might yield unexpected results. In this case, use the Advanced Search option instead, and you can specify whether you wish to query 'London' in titles, as place of publication, or its representations within images.

You can search partial terms (e.g. 'child' will yield 'children'), but note that partial terms will yield less precise results (e.g. 'sing' rather than 'singing' will yield 'kissing').

As well as allowing users to query the database, the order in which records are displayed can also be selected, by using this drop-down box. By default, the database displays results by Illustrator, and secondarily (in all cases) by the unique DMVI code assigned to the record.

Ways of ordering records are as follows:

• Illustrator (default): the artist of the original image;
  
• Author of the illustrated text;
  
• Engraver: the engraver of the illustrated image;
  
• Source text: the short-title of the book/periodical within which the text was published;
  
• Illustration title: the short-title of the illustration;
  
• Date: the original publication date of the illustrated text;
  
• Genre: the generic classification of the illustrated text.
